Barfuß-Holzbearbeitung

Barefoot hewing

people often talk about the preference of Japanese carpenters to work barefoot ... and ensure the safety of this procedure in question. Obviously, the made in Japan always so, and even photos from the Winter of Amemiya sans website shows the workers with flexible light shoes, so I guess that a good stand is on the trunk is very important.

What if the ax slips? Well, the axes are as sharp and heavy that you definitely would need a very solid steel cap to stop it (which would probably damage the valuable edge!). I assume that is the background art, the feet out of the way, in the event that the ax swings further than they should. Barefoot gives one the right incentive to be safe at this point.

As part of our carving courses we were often asked whether new students should wear a glove that protects against slips of the knife. We decided that it is a better approach to teach techniques that prevent slipping. With bare hands one has the best "grip" on the tools, and the student is focused on safety. We have very few injuries so far this seems to be paying off.

Planing together Kesurokai 2007

"Kesurokai" in Japanese means "Together planing" and the focus of the Japanese Kesurokai meeting are planing contests. In this case, connect the craftsmen are traded against each other for as long as possible to plane, smooth, paper-thin shavings from a block of wood. This is not only a test of skills with this tool, but also sharpening their skills.

Japanese planes and sharpening Kesurokai 2007

The Japanese craftsmen are very proud of your sharpening art and they invest many hours to keep the tools in perfect condition. This effort is not wasted, as the surface that a well-sharpened plane leaves need not be further processed. You therefore save the time people would spend the next room with the grinding of the surface.

Japanese water stones are famous for its good grinding performance and we use them to raise the many tools we use in our carving courses . Notice, however, are cheaper, synthetic stones, and we were amazed at the difference when Hannes gave us a stone, which he brought from Japan. The removal of this stone is truly remarkable.

Eating together Kesurokai 2007

An important aspect of Kesurokai is that the craftsmen spend their free time together, talking, sharing the accommodation and food together. Thus, a much deeper insight into the possible respective different culture than would be possible to work with.

food (and drink!) Is very important given the heavy manual labor to perform these craftsmen. While Hannah and Mikhail have built our small barn , I had the feeling of being permanently only in shopping and cooking, but fortunately they were good with the dishes!

The building site in Japan they have already prepared a great cooking / dining area with traditional means fire that is already being well used:

I'm really looking forward to the traditional Japanese Eat, but I must again before a little practice with chopsticks.

Modellbau für den Pavillon

I got some new photos that show how Hannah and Mark make a scale model of the pavilion, which is an important part of the construction process.

This is a first try of the drawn plan, an initial physical test of whether the vote in all dimensions and fit the puzzle together at the end. I assume that skilled craftsmen as they noticed this also which parts of the structure could pose potential problems when the real pavilion will be built.

The nearly-complete model

Now the model is not yet quite, but almost done - you'll find more pictures in the Photo Album .

the workflow of today's architects, the construction of physical models is increasingly displaced by CAD computer models, which seems to be faster and more accurate in some ways. However, I have been teaching regularly at the Sint Lucas School of Architecture, Brussels , and often argue that local teachers, I teach, to computer models. You believe that you learn through the physical model much more about the planned structure kann.

Ein weiterer, deutlicher Unterschied zwischen den Werkzeugen der Japaner und Europäer zeigt sich bei the big saws that are used to separate the strains, ie, to cut along the grain of the wood, rather than across it. In a previous post I have already shown some pictures of the popular Japanese saw, which is used for this purpose. It is an impressive tool: Use

the saw, the European carpenters mostly for this purpose is a two-person saw like this, although size and detailed specification can be very different:

There is also a large number of different saws for cross Woodworking:

Video-Ethnografie

Nicola-filming If something goes wrong, the instinctive reaction is to run away, but this is rarely the best course of action. As we keep telling the people who cut themselves during our carving courses : You have to understand what happened so that it does not happen again.

I just had a bad Experience: a few people for whom I do occasional film shoots, wanted the complete recordings I had made, and our agreement was spinning really only a few sound bytes that I should provide for a site. Instinctively, I immediately said, "Forget it," but could not immediately explain why, which made for some discontent.

Anyway, now I have become smarter about what my kind regards to Mech recordings. They are created with the goal of a more research-based observation as they are intended for publication. I use unobtrusive (but high tech) equipment, I have developed discreet film techniques, and I work (with some success) hard for me to integrate among the people I film. This way I get them very close and can capture authentic scenes, rather than a kind of acting for the camera.

means that I should capture many things that really should not be included; stuff that may seem too personal or rude or unprofessional may be the persons admitted. So I am very cautious when it comes to dealing with the recordings, I never use something that I have a feeling it might jeopardize my position of trust. If it is borderline, I wonder maybe after, but only when I put the question Person know well, or I would not even risk the question. I do not think that I may delegate that responsibility to others, so I never give the raw material out of hand.

Although this incident was unpleasant, I now understand a little better what I do ... and I will ensure that others do, I film. Finally a video that I made in the course of research for my PhD:
